Recycling

Leading the nation in the most comprehensive recycling program, SF introduced mandatory compostable recycling in 2009. In addition to containers and paper, the city hailed this step as an effective way to cut about two-thirds of the 618,000 tons of waste the city sent to landfill in 2007.
