- Movie director George Lucas’ digital arts centre, a production campus devoted to digital cinema, videogames, and the creative exploration of new digital tools, is located in the city’s historic Presidio. Visitors can explore the lobby gallery of Lucas film memorabilia, including props and costumes from the Star Wars film series, during regular business hours.
- Although San Francisco’s cable cars take centre stage, the city’s impressive array of refurbished historic street cars from cities around the world offer a great local transportation experience.
- It’s believed that the fortune cookie originated in San Francisco by a Japanese immigrant who operated a tea shop in Golden Gate Park’s Japanese Garden.
- A cast of Rodin’s The Thinker sits pensively outside the California Palace of Legion of Honor, which houses more than 80 of his works.
- San Francisco’s world famous clam chowder, most commonly found at Fisherman’s Wharf, originated as a meal for fisherman returning from a long day on the boats. - Angel Island, considered the Ellis Island of the West, is where more than 175,000 Chinese immigrants waited to enter the United States. On February 15, 2009, after three and a half years since the National Historic Landmark was closed for restoration work, the historic Immigration Station was reopened to the public. Angel Island also provides great hiking and spectacular views on the city skyline.
- Irish Coffee was introduced in the United States in 1952 at San Francisco’s Buena Vista Café. The Buena Vista still stands today and still mixes the warming concoction, an elixir on a chilly, foggy San Francisco day.
